When there is no current Tech research going on, Labs should not use Unity

I like to do my research in a stop-and-go way, where I have a lot of Labs, like 5 or 6 or 8 (or more), and when I finish researching one Tech, then I learn what it does and how to use it, then after 5-20 minutes I pick another Tech, finish it, learn what it does.

To avoid wasting Unity from idle Labs, I have to constantly pause and un-pause them manually. I don't mind the electricity usage of an idle Lab, or if it costs a small amount of Maintenance, but the Unity loss hurts me and I want to avoid it, and so I pause and un-pause, pause and un-pause.

Why not remove this chore from the game, and instead make Labs so that they only consume Unity when there is on-going research?
