Why have recipe for dirt (compost + gravel)?

If you can just dump compost and it turns into dirt, why go through the step of making dirt from compost? What is the point?

Dirt fills better than rock+compost and you can get more growable surface.

You can get rid of stone or produce more dirt from same amount of compost.
