Compost should increase fertility if a farm is build on it
I love the terraforming aspects of this game and spend quite some time building out long slag piers for my cargo docks and digging 1 deep rock floors to fill with dirt to build farms, so at one point I thought - Let's make lots of compost and build the farm on that. I hoped, since it has a different grass color in the game when you drop compost somewhere, that it would increase either the base fertility, or the fertility regeneration of the farm. Unfortunatly, mechanically compost is identical to dirt. That felt a little disappointing.
Additionally, the fertility could be decided by all ground under the farm. Currently, you can only build farms if the ground is like 90% dirt. Maybe it could be made that the material underneath has a fertility score, and the integral over the fertility score gives you the base fertility as well as the regeneration.

Rolling StenCompost is turned into dirt the exact moment it is dumped into the world. Also i may take a lot of effort (and dirt) for farmers to turn rock surface into fertile one.
Having compost as ground would effect only initial fertility, which already doesn't matter in only months - even compost will degenerate quickly if no fertilizers are used.
So no reason do add compost as new material type and this type of change.
