DeznekCZThe rails May be done likes a trasportation belt while construction.
The station will then creator wagons automatized trains will take them bertween them.
Rails piece: 2 steel Beam, 10 concrete, 10 gravel
Station: depends on type, fluid/solid/loose loader

DreddMaybe narrow-gauge railway ? normal railway could be to big for such small islands, unless islands could be bigger :D

UberBlueOnly if they are Hover trains that don't need tracks. Land already too messy with all the pipes and conveyors.

PandarocThe maps are way too small for trains. For what would it be useful gameplay wise. Nothing

KEVINWhile I understand the excitement in general around trains, I don't think it makes sense for the map scale in this game. For a game like Factorio with huge maps and super long distances and extreme scale, totally makes sense.
I think the game already provides enough options to transmit material in bulk and to scale it up as you progress to later game. -

EricNot a fan of trains as they would be grid based as in anno (I assume), though I do enjoy them quiet a lot, even when the rails look cringe as.
If I had to choose transport I would go for cargo airships as they are exactly the same as trucks (saves programming) and can go over blocked paths like buildings, mountains and the likes. -

Mike CrosleyI think they meant "Locomotives" with no apostrophe unless he is suggesting things that would belong to locomotives.

rolarTrains are trains. In a game where you need to move loads from point A to point B, there just have to be trains. Not necessarily full-size and not necessarily very practical.
Although it would be good to replace a bunch of trucks with one train on permanent routes. -

PatI like trains but the maps would need to be larger, really no need atm

OnurI would like to have train too into the game and each vagon could carry fluid, solid or loose.

BluetoothThePirateNarrow-gauge industrial railroads would be nice to have, the kind that serve real-life factories and mines. They could move a lot of material and can be small enough that they could run through a one-height gap, meaning you could run them under vehicle bridges and the tracks could be the same size as current transports.

AngrytreefrogI don't think Trains would be useful because of the distances and some people are saying make them like transports but the currents transports do a good job moving stuff already. Unless maps are being seriously considered to be sized up I don't think this would be helpful.

SindracoMinecarts could transport loose products
Maintenance free and constructing rail is cheaper than kilometers of belts -

Sverre BrubækInstead of trains how about a system like FOUP. I.e. pods. There is a need to make some sort of shared transport that will not jam as a bus of belts become rather unmanageable quick, and as they are first in first out they jam with mixed goods unless managed very carefully. A pod network wit compact loading and unloading stations could serve as such a shared transport without looking either too big or out of place, and in the endgame we are essentially making an outdoor waferfab so why not a FOUP in time for that?

MarkTrains are neat, but above comments describe, there is no practical use for trains in this game that i can see.

DarkaiserWhile I agree that the scale is not big enough for full-sized locomotives, smaller (narrow-gauge) rails have been used a LOT in manufacturing. The Empire State Building had one on EACH floor to move materials around faster. I could see a real place for this as a replacement for longer truck routes and long belts. I don't think that liquids and gasses should be an option though...just Loose materials and the stuff that goes on Flat Belts.
The lower tier would be coal/water while the higher one could be electric (cost more to build but less Maint. to operate maybe?). -

OchiniwaI am actually not so much in favor of trains as this would fundamentally change the game. Everything can be done with trucks and bets currently. Trains would make it a different game and the maps are actually quite small for this. my 50 cents

Gabriel LimaTrains would be a great idea, because sometimes we have to take a lot of cargo to certain places, and certainly the trucks would be overloaded.
Because sometimes, a certain resource mine runs out, so we have to change the whole factory layout to fit that, and the new mineral deposits are relatively far away, so we could just load the train with the ores and deliver it to the factory that is already in operation, without having to take the entire smelting plant to the new location or make the trucks walk a lot to deliver the resource. -

ostlandrI love the idea! Right now I am mining coal on the back end of my island, and those huge haul trucks are burning a LOT of precious diesel to get it to the power plant. FYI I would gladly buy trains as a DLC- devs need to eat too! :-)
Balance would be requiring lots of resources to build the railroad, but costing fewer resources per unit/distance to move products.
Suggestions:
Railroad tracks- Tier 1 requires wood & iron- low speed limit. T2 wood and steel- higher speed limit. T3 rconcrete, steel & a tiny amount of rubber- highest speed limit.
Locomotives- T1 requires iron & mechaincal parts, uses coal & sand- hauls few wagons. T2 steel & mechanical parts, use coal & sand- more wagons. T3 steel & vehicle parts, use diesel & sand- even more wagons. Possible T4, steel & electronics, uses sand, consumes electricity.
Would need a vehicle depot to supply the trains with fuel & sand- also stations for loading and unloading products, with connections in and out to storages. -

NoelI do not think that trains are needed in COI. I would prefer to have "internal" cargo barges or ships. this way you can move stuff from one end of the map to the other much more neatly that adding train tracks on a map that is already difficult enough to make everything fit with conveyors and pipes.

PavelMIf you leave idea of "island" and have maps without sea or only partially-sea, you can make trains to work just like cargo ships! You can build and upgrade stations on edge of maps and then CAN watch trains to get loaded and unloaded and drive around the tracks (make it looking complex enough, more track in stations etc.) and it would not change gameplay. Win-win option?

audiohereMany keep knocking the scale of the island and trains but try to think of a minecart rather than large locomotives transporting many cars of freight and cargo around the map. A simple point A to B straight line would help expedite ore removal/crops/water/wastewater transport over a distance.

AlanI do love to see a train like or maybe road train? To transfer resources among different production area

KhazulNot sure about trains specifically, but I do think something is very much needed to facilitate bulk transfer of mixed cargo from one side of an island to another, particularly on the larger islands or where passing through the middle is impractical until very late game. I and not sure trains is the answer, but maybe a significant improvement to transport logistics specifically aimed at bundling a mixed bus from one zone to another.
Think maybe transport hub building at each end that packs stuff (from belts/pipes) into shipping containers (each contains completely mixed cargo) truck move the containers, and they are unpacked at the destination hub back onto belts/pipes etc. Truck can then be assigned to the inter-hub routes as currently.
Each hub might have say 10 each of pipe, u and flat conveyor ports in and out, or maybe one with in ports and another with out ports etc. In fact the hubs could be done like the existing cargo ship ports with their cargo type modules. Max of 12/16? -

Stephen NicholasToo right, trains are a huge part of our industry. Yet maybe bigger islands too?

DiggerAcesimple Mine Cars would do the job and take away the some of the need for such high road transport

mathiasyou dont need trains in this game, you have belts to do the job lol. takes to much space and is really not needed, i just put a big stirage close to a mine and connect it with belts where it needs to be , is much better then trains, this is not anno right!

JimInstead of trains running on rails - Land trains - basically a truck with several trailers - and specific load and drop points would be more practical?
