Train Tier system
It seems a little odd that researching trains gives you both diesel and steam locomotives at the same time.
Instead, it might be a better idea to push steam into t1, diesel t2 and hydro t3, maybe having each tier of train come with an assortment of different level cars too and have the rails be tier limited, or at least have different materials used in construction.
This way, you don't reach the point of locomotives and have no use for one of the classes available to you - as it seems that steam engines are both faster, and capable of carrying weight better than diesel, though carrying a tender car does eat up a slot, or maybe re-balance them.
Final tier would include maybe electric trains and the ability to electrify track segments for HSR and have those electric trains have different speed rules for gradient.

Final-FanI have yet to do much with trains, but my understanding is that steam vs. diesel is more nuanced than that: that steam's traction and acceleration make it better for very short runs or for rail lines with steep and/or extensive inclines, whereas diesel is more fuel efficient and has a much higher top speed, both of which are more advantageous on longer runs.
Electric trains would be nice, but might be too easy as long as the game doesn't require any electrical hookups. It's all just magically distributed as long as you are generating electricity, so implementing electrical trains would be "free" vs. the infrastructure necessary to use other locomotives. -

Rolling StenThere is no reason to push diesel locomotives to another research as we already have diesel trucks and many locomotives were using engines from trucks, so not much research is needed. It is indeed more complicated to develop steam locomotive with some effectivity in mind.
Eletric trains would be nice, but we were told they will not be added to the game.
They are planning higher tiers of trains though (including longer wagons with much higher capacity).
