Train Waiting Bay - Siding Track Designation
The train system got huge improvement in update 4.1. Amazing! I love how trains can now be used to move all kinds of material without having to assign routes.
One remaining annoying bit is the train waiting mechanism. It requires assignment of waypoints to use as waiting bays. As space is a premium, it's often necessary to use bidirectional waiting sidings near an end-of-line station, where the train can pull in backward after visiting the station, and then pull in forward to revisit the same station a while later. A few problems I'm having with that
- with waypoints, the train stopping position is unpredictable. Sometimes it stops with it's tail still on the mainline
- trains tend to stop with their front near the waypoint, which requires bidirectional waypoints to be long enough to fit the train stopping from both direction
- second trains inbound to the station sometimes decide to route through the waiting track, meaning the first train is unable to exit the station and go into the waiting track
To solve this, I propose:
- use the ingenious track zone system to add a "waiting zone"
- when train needs to wait, it looks for the nearest waiting zone which is large enough to fit it (so it won't overhang)
- a train can only enter a waiting zone when it is going to wait there (no through traffic)

Also, obviously, only one train can go to one waiting zone at a time
