  First, there are landslides - if you clear a tile and landslide happens (because of mining on nearby tiles), then it will not be cleared again.
  Second - people usually wants to see how much progress was made. Or make sure ramps will be remade if something happens to them.
  There could be some tool to clear done fields on selected area (with settings like to remove them only when all surrounding tiles are also done). Or to make done fields invisible.

  How would you determine if something "can't be completed"? What if a tile gets completed *for now*, removes itself, but when it needs clearing again you have to re-add it? I think it'd be better if there was an option to make completed squares invisible.

  well yes. with this option "on" the the marker would clear when the mining is done. if a follow on landslide came then it would be a land slide. that is why it's an option to turn on and off depending on your need.
  
  but FYI keeping a road clear is better done with the leveling too.

  That could be a box check because some of us use the mining and dumping as ground markers for roads and dock placement.

  and another issue is - if the game auto-unmarks tiles that were mined to the height you specify - how would you know which tiles you specified ? what if you want to do something else with a mined tile ? what if you want to be able to tell if a tile was mined and can now be used to build on or fill with a layer of dirt (for farming, for example) ? how would you easily distinguish it from other tiles unless you try to re-draw that mining designation ? I get why you would want this (it can be a problem when pasting blueprints, for one), but it's much simpler to unmark any tiles you want on your own so you know what was dug up lately
